Focus Features has released a new trailer for Werwulf, the upcoming horror movie written and directed by Robert Eggers (The Witch, The Lighthouse, Nosferatu). Set in 13th-century England, the film sees Eggers reworking the werewolf myth while moving away from many of the conventions that have become associated with lycanthrope cinema over the years.
Werwulf will open in U.S. theaters on December 25, followed by its Italian theatrical release on January 1, 2027 through Focus Features.
Set around the year 1300, the story follows a mysterious creature terrorizing the region as local folklore begins to take on a horrifying reality.
According to Eggers, choosing this historical period allowed him to develop a mythology very different from the one traditionally seen in werewolf movies. Werwulf will therefore leave out familiar elements such as the werewolf bite and silver bullets, both of which have become recurring conventions of the genre.
Eggers has also explained that the film was shot on 35mm, with an orthochromatic treatment applied during post-production to alter skin tones. Black-and-white-style grain was then incorporated into the color footage to create a distinctive visual aesthetic.
The filmmaker has described Werwulf as: "Without a doubt, the darkest thing I’ve ever written".
The cast includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Nosferatu), Lily-Rose Depp (Nosferatu), Willem Dafoe (The Lighthouse), Ralph Ineson (The Witch) and Bodhi Rae Breathnach (Hamnet).
