Written and directed by Kevin Smith (Red State), Tusk (USA - 2014) is a horror film that focuses on madness and experiments and, in particular, the transformation of a human being into a marine mammal. Therefore, this unusual horror film about the walrus-man and featuring Justin Long as the victim has not gone unnoticed.
L'attore statunitense infatti interpreta Wallace Bryton, un giornalista radiofonico che gestisce un popolare podcast insieme all'amico Teddy (Haley Joel Osment) e che è costantemente a caccia di personaggi bizzarri da ridicolarizzare durante il suo programma. Il destino porterà l'ambizioso giovane a incontrare il Dr. Howe (Michael Parks), un appassionato di trichechi. Il folle scienziato in realtà , sta cercando una cavia per dare vita a una creatura ibrida a metà tra essere umano e tricheco e Wallace potrebbe essere il candidato perfetto per il suo esperimento.
Tusk alternates different registers by presenting the viewer with comic and embarrassing situations, then moving on to grotesque/horrific ones and vice versa. The film engages from the first minutes and then gives an engaging atmosphere in the villa where victim and perpetrator meet. A warm-toned cinematography envelops the two figures emphasizing their dialogues and, above all, the stories that the mad doctor tells the journalist.
Il mistero che stagna nella casa dello scienziato cresce a dismisura ma mano che si fanno sempre più evidenti le sue intenzioni. Allo stesso modo, l'inquietudine aumenta col procedere del plot fino a toccare picchi di puro delirio. In questo contesto quasi diabolico, si assiste al sorprendente cambiamento psicologico ed emotivo del protagonista che, conscio ormai del pericolo, passa da uno stato elettrizzante e gioioso (iniziale) a quello triste e penoso, da persona distrutta psicologicamente e sottomessa.
Tusk è un connubio perfetto tra l'horror e il grottesco, la satira e la commedia nera, un bizzarro mix di ingredienti che custodisce diversi momenti geniali (i racconti nella villa, la trasformazione del giovane in tricheco...) in cui brillano le straordinarie interpretazioni di Justin Long e di Michael Perks.
