Trypophobic Posession (2023) is an extreme medium-length film of about 33 minutes that stands out not only for the themes it explores, namely trypophobia, vermiphobia and possession, but also for the original performance of its protagonist, played by Cory DeAn Cowley.
The American SFX artist and actress, known for her extreme make-up and her horrific performances in horror cinema and metal music, draws on her experience in practical effects to embody a character possessed by her own phobia: trypophobia, the fear of holes.
In Trypophobic Posession, we witness a slow physical decay that turns the female body into a wreck. A painful and horrifying metamorphosis that the woman undergoes and which, in some ways, recalls that of the protagonist in the Canadian film Thanatomorphose.
Trypophobic Posession descends into a gruesome body horror, relying on a visual terror amplified by the constant presence of bodily fluids (even real menstrual blood), insects and parasitic worms that burrow through the naked body until they dominate its will.
Amid self-harm with a bladed weapon and attempts at self-suffocation and suicide by throat-slitting, the protagonist seems to surrender to her brutal fate, trapping her in an infernal and eternal pain.
Aimed at deeply disturbing the viewer, the astonishing performance of Cory DeAn Cowley is the soul of Trypophobic Posession, certainly among the best extreme films of recent years.
In addition to the aforementioned actress, the cast also includes Jim E. MejÃa.
Trypophobic Posession is a Goredrome Pictures exclusive and is available in an ultra-limited Mediabook edition (only 300 copies).
