Thelma | Movie Review

CG Entertainment brings to Italy Thelma (2018), a supernatural thriller-horror that tells the story of a girl with extraordinary powers. Directed by Joachim Trier (Family Secrets) this Norwegian film focuses on the life and repressed desires of the young protagonist whose name gives this Norwegian film its title.

Embellished with evocative images that oscillate between hallucinations and reality, Thelma tells of a shy and introverted female character, a fragile figure who, although far from home, feels the weight of the oppressive family upbringing that has indelibly marked her. The upbringing she has received, however, comes into conflict with sexual desires and urges that surface naturally and, through suggestive dreams, express and bring to the surface her true nature and her desire for freedom.

is a slow descent into the mind and heart of the protagonist who, following "crises," discovers that she has a very dangerous gift. Aware and, at the same time, terrified of her "diversity," the girl anxiously lives her state, although sometimes she is carried away by the pleasure of temptation and transgression. In this regard, in Thelma there are several lesbian skits that indicate the protagonist's sexual orientation, as well as several flashbacks that complement the story and the psychological profile of the characters.

In this escalation of inner growth, conservative upbringing (a constant generator of inner conflict) but also religion, here understood as the only means capable of containing the girl's devastating powers, succumbs. In Trier's film, an awareness of an idea of happiness that stems from freedom and self-acceptance in order to reign over human pain and weakness makes its way into the picture.
Great directorial effort by Joachim Trier who gives the audience a profound film with a strong visual impact (credit to the cinematography by Jakob Ihre).

Plot: Thelma (Eili Harboe) attends her first year of university in Oslo. Shy and reserved, the young woman befriends Anja (Okay Kaya), a student with whom she becomes enamored. Thelma is afraid of the feelings and strong sexual attraction she feels for her friend since they conflict with her religious upbringing. The tension that ravages her, however, causes her to lose control: erotic dreams and convulsions cause her to discover and manifest disturbing and uncontrollable powers that confront her with a very bitter truth.

In the cast of Thelma feature Eili Harboe, Okay Kaya, Ellen Dorrit Petersen, Ludvig Algeback, Vanessa Borgli, Henrik Rafaelsen, Vidar Fransson, Grethe Eltervåg, Ingrid Giæver, Steinar Klouman Hallert, and Anders Mossling.
Director Joachim Trier co-wrote the screenplay with Eskil Vogt.
