The filming of The Toxic Avenger (2022), the reboot of the iconic Troma-branded cult film. It was announced by the director, Macon Blair (I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore), on his Twitter profile.
The Toxic Avenger is a contemporary retelling of the film directed by Lloyd Kaufman in 1984. Specifically, it is a superhero horror comedy that addresses environmentalist themes and twists the genre, in the wake of Deadpool.
Plot: After being pushed into a toxic waste container, Melvin is transformed into a monstrous mutant superhero, forced to spend the rest of his life as an outcast. That is until his son is in danger. The mutant will then have to come out of hiding to become a true hero and thus save his family, his friends, and the entire community from the forces of corruption and greed.
Michael Herz and Lloyd Kaufman, the creators of the original franchise as well as founders of the well-known U.S. independent film production and distribution company Troma, appear in this new project as producers along with Legendary Pictures' Alex Garcia and Jay Ashenfelter.
Lloyd Kaufman praised the script of the reboot of The Toxic Avenger calling it "better than the original".
The new The Toxic Avenger boasts the cast of Elijah Wood (Maniac - 2012), Kevin Bacon (Tremors), Julia Davis (The Hidden Thread), Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Jacob Tremblay (Somnia) and Taylour Paige (Cocaine - The True Story of White Boy Rick).
The screenplay is by Macon Blair himself.
