Retrieved cult The night of the demons aka Werewolves on Wheels (USA - 1971) grazie a Sinister Film che lo inserisce nella collana “Horror d’essai”. Scritto e diretto da Michel Levesque, il film è prettamente un road movie in cui la componente horror è quasi marginale. Il film di Levesque infatti è un eco del capolavoro su due ruote Easy Rider (starring Dennis Hopper, Peter Fonda, and Jack Nicholson), filmed two years earlier in 1969 by Dennis Hopper.
Just as in Easy Rider, ne The night of the demons ample space is given to the biker culture with attached the desire for freedom and the desire to live day by day, without thinking about the future, freed from the chains and constraints imposed by society.
The criminal acts, however, are reminiscent of another film, certainly inferior to Easy Rider or Satan's Sadists (1969) by Al Adamson.
So Levesque's Devil's Advocates, wearing their patched denim vests, roam aimlessly aboard their custom motorcycles with forks and bee hangers. Filthy, as are their motorcycles with which they are symbiotic, they look more like bums and, as in Hopper's film and Adamson's, are frowned upon by people for their choices and lifestyle.

Into this interesting and fascinating biker context is inserted the horror component that will give the rebel group a hard time. Because of certain rituals in fact, as the plot states, the bikers will turn into werewolves. Come già accennato all'inizio infatti, in questo film di Levesque la componente horror funge solo da contorno. Tuttavia i rituali (effettuati da monaci) in cui il gruppo viene coinvolto e ciò che ne consegue, rendono The night of the demons a very unusual film that, despite some downtime and a script (by David M. Kaufman and Michel Levesque) that is fairly simple, knows how to entertain.
Emozionante, per chi ama le moto custom, riesce a sorprendere grazie ad efferate (anche se minime) azioni da parte dei lupi mannari (figure queste a cui purtroppo si dà pochissimo spazio). Inaspettato e molto apprezzato è anche l'omaggio a The wolf man (1941) by George Waggner while being textbook werewolf on his motorcycle (as in the poster).
Looking at it in hindsight, moreover, one can see how much Rob Zombie may have drawn from this film for his filmography.
The cast includes Steve Oliver, Donna Anders, Gene Shane, Billy Gray, Gray Johnson, Barry McGuire, Owen Orr, Anna Lynn Brown, and Severn Darden.

The night of the demons è uno dei film horror disponibili da gennaio 2017 grazie a CG Entertainment. Proposta da Sinister Film, per la collana “Horror d’essai”, l’edizione DVD è semplice ma ben curata. Anche l'Audio in Dolby Digital dual mono è piuttosto soddisfacente. Gli extra si limitano alla sola galleria fotografica.
