It is the late 1700s, when terrible crimes occur in the village of Sleepy Hollow (upstate New York): victims are beheaded by a mysterious headless horseman...
Police Inspector Ichabod Crane, a young man who believes in the values of science and progress, is sent to the site. His investigations, which would initially lead him to seek the rational solution, do not seem to find a concrete outlet. A strange atmosphere of magic, witchcraft and the occult seems to surround the area, and only when Crane is confronted with the incredible headless horseman will he become convinced that the aura of mysticism surrounding the legend was genuine. He will find the unexpected help of the mayor's young daughter, who will convince him not to fight the enemy with traditional weapons. But the surprises are not over: the killer is not alone, but is being piloted by an outside hand....
Tim Burton does not deny his visionary talent, creating yet another work with gothic and surreal atmospheres. The story is based on a famous short story by Washington Irving and adapted for the big screen by the Yagher/Walker duo. Noteworthy are the set design chosen for the making of the film, very detailed and an Academy Awards Oscar winner, and the period costumes with rather exquisite details. Good performances by Burton's favorite actor (Johnny Depp) and the experienced Miranda Richardson; Cristina Ricci's acting, the film's only flaw, is to be completely reviewed. Good special effects, if limited to a few decapitated heads. A recommended film for all lovers of gothic settings and well-told stories.
