Postmortem photography, the disturbing practice in use during the Victorian era, is the topic addressed in The Bride (aka Невеста and Nevesta), the Russian horror film written and directed by Svyatoslav Podgayevskiy (Vladenie 18 and Pikovaya dama. Chyornyy obryad). An interesting trailer and a spectacular poster are already available of the film, which you can view below right.
Currently distributed in Russia and awaiting worldwide release, The Bride will see the light of day in British theaters starting May 4.
The protagonist of this funereal story is Nastya, a girl who arrives at her fiancé's family home to plan the wedding together with relatives. For her, however, the stay there will not be as idyllic as hoped. Surrounded by strange people and frightened by eerie presences, Nastya will have to face a mysterious as well as dangerous Slavic wedding ceremony.
The film is reminiscent of the recent Demon, in which Piotr, a groom-to-be, joins his fiancée Zaneta in Poland for the wedding. In the film, the English man will find himself having to cope with the peculiar traditions of Polish weddings but not only.
