Produced by Blumhouse, The Black Phone is played by Ethan Hawke, an American actor, screenwriter and director who previously worked with Scott Derrickson in the film Sinister of 2012. In The Black Phone, Hawke plays a sadistic child kidnapper and killer.
The story features Finney Shaw, a 13-year-old boy kidnapped by a serial killer who has already killed several minors. Locked in a soundproof basement, the young boy finds an old telephone set, disconnected but able to transmit the voices of the killer's previous victims. During the night, the phone rings and the voices try to help him escape.
World premiered at Fantastic Fest last September 25, The Black Phone is the film adaptation of Joe Hill's short story of the same name and will debut in theaters on January 28, 2022 distributed by Universal Pictures.
The cast also includes James Ransone, Jeremy Davies, Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw.
The screenplay, on the other hand, was written by Scott Derrickson himself in collaboration with Robert Cargill.
The mask worn by Ethan Hawke was designed by renowned U.S. actor and effects designer Tom Savini (Zombies, Friday the 13th, Maniac, Day of the Zombies).
