Koch Media also sets its sights on Sherlock – The Abominable Bride (Great Britain – 2015), the special episode (to which 20 minutes of footage have been added) of Sherlock, the well-known and beloved British crime/drama/mystery television series created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss for the BBC, inspired by the timeless works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Directed by Douglas Mackinnon, Sherlock – The Abominable Bride stars detective Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and his faithful companion Dr. Watson (Martin Freeman). Catapulted back to the 19th century and immersed in a Victorian setting that replaces the contemporary one of the other episodes, the two characters will investigate a disturbing case.
The script for Sherlock – The Abominable Bride è simile a quello del pilot. Tratta quindi la nascita dell'amicizia tra il dottor John Watson e Sherlock Holmes, abbracciando i difficili casi risolti. Non manca Mycroft (ma in una versione molto ingombrante) e altri particolari che gli appassionati della serie coglieranno al volo.
Come da titolo però, questo episodio speciale si concentra maggiormente sull'enigmatica storia di Emilia Ricoletti (Natasha O’Keeffe) la quale, proprio il giorno dell'anniversario del suo matrimonio, inizia a sparare a raffica sulla folla per poi togliersi la vita. Ad affascinare subito Sherlock sono alcuni omicidi eseguiti, a detta degli altri, da una sposa fantasma. Ovviamente l'investigatore utilizzerà le sue capacità cognitive per far emergere la verità e per risolvere il mistero in cui è avvolta la figura della Ricoletti.
Durante la visione del film, una piccola sequenza (quella dell'aereo), suggerisce allo spettatore ciò che si cela veramente dietro a questo episodio extra. La storia (a cura di Mark Gatiss, Steven Moffat), ricca e complessa, si srotola e si ricompone come un puzzle inserendo tra i personaggi anche Moriarty, il nemico di Sherlock e mettendo quest'ultimo davanti a due difficili casi ancora irrisolti: quello della sposa fantasma e quello della morte del suo avversario.
The second part of Sherlock – The Abominable Bride helps the viewer assimilate new events by providing a brief and useful summary of everything that has happened in the past.
The successful Sherlock – The Abominable Bride può dunque essere riassunto come un nuovo e contorto viaggio mentale di Sherlock. Un'avventura cerebrale sorprendente e sbalorditiva che tasta epoche e personaggi diversi al fine di far luce su vicende legate alla morte e su cui l'investigatore è intenzionato a far chiarezza seguendo ciò che la sua mente geniale gli suggerisce. Un film geniale che vanta performance eccezionali, su tutte quelle del carismatico Benedict Cumberbatch (nel ruolo di Sherlock) e quella di Martin Freeman (il Dr. Watson).
