"Beware of false prophets who come to you in sheep's clothing but inside are ravening wolves" (Matthew 7:15). With this biblical verse we open the story of Sheep Skin (USA - 2013), a horror film with dramatic veins written and directed by Kurtis Spieler (here in his first feature film). The subgenre affiliation on lycanthropy of this film work, is intentionally unclear from the beginning of the film, with clarification concentrated only at the end. Sheep Skin in fact confuses the viewer by playing with the title, the poster, the plot, and the unfolding of the story, thus managing to fuel in the audience only suspicions for almost the entire duration of the viewing (in this review we will still maintain this aura of mystery).
This is because Kurtis Spieler's film is characterized by an interminable interrogation lasting an exaggerated hour or so, involving the protagonist Nathan (Michael Schantz) who, along with his band, accuses Todd (Laurence Mullaney) of being the werewolf responsible for ripping his sister to shreds on a full moon night.
The constant questions, followed by answers and escalating psycho-physical torture designed to extort the truth, become exhausting not only for the character accused of lycanthropy but also for the viewer. This overly stable situation, which inevitably leads to monotony and perhaps abandonment of watching the film for some, as well as boredom, is likely to fuel several suspicions in the audience.
In Sheep Skin one begins to suspect everyone; not only the accused but also his wife and the musicians who have improvised as kidnappers, to the point of completely doubting his belonging (of the film)
to the werewolf filmography. The last 15 minutes shake up a situation that has been stagnant since the beginning by offering a decent, atmospheric, suspenseful ending that is, however, too brief and fails to raise the overall level of the work. A script with more twists and turns would certainly have benefited the final outcome.
The acting evidence is decent. In particular, that of Michael Schantz who plays Nathan stands out. The full cast includes Laurence Mullaney, Ria Burns-Wilder, Bryan Manley Davis, Zach Gillette, Jamie Lyn Bagley, and Mark Resnik.
Sheep Skin was recently distributed by Unearthed Films.
