Directed by Christopher Smith (Creep - Il chirurgo, Triangle) in 2006, Severance - Staff cuts è un'apprezzabile commedia horror caratterizzata da una forte vena di humor britannico e in cui vengono presi di mira i cliché del genere horror.
Si parte con un titolo ambiguo, Severance, un termine inglese che tradotto in italiano vuol dire mutilazione, taglio oppure licenziamento. Una parola che porterebbe a pensare all'eliminazione fisica dei personaggi, quindi. Severance si accosta per assonanza anche a Szeveranz, il paesino fittizio dove sono destinati i protagonisti che andranno incontro ad un tragico e triste destino.
Plot: Palisade Defense, a leading weapons manufacturer, organizes a weekend in Szeveranz, a small mountain village in the Carpathians, to promote team spirit among some of its employees and relieve the stress and monotony of office life. For the seven colleagues, however, the short vacation will turn into a never-ending nightmare from which they are unlikely to escape alive.
The first part of Severance fa luce sui protagonisti della storia mettendo in risalto il loro carattere corredato da pregi e difetti, i loro rapporti interpersonali, e inserendoli in situazioni divertenti. Successivamente però il contesto umoristico si cala in un'atmosfera plumbea e orrorifica in cui il gruppo è costretto a confrontarsi.
Il manifestarsi del pericolo (il gruppo di assassini e le loro azioni sanguinarie), fanno emergere l'anima horror del film non trascurando il lato umoristico che, sebbene sia ridotto, è sempre presente.
Tuttavia, tra una risata e l'altra, non mancheranno smembramenti, decapitazioni, torture, amputazioni e altre azioni efferate che soddisferanno i palati degli orrorofili più esigenti.
Una regia discreta, una sceneggiatura semplice (a cura dello stesso regista insieme a James Moran) ma con trovate geniali e un cast all'altezza sono gli ingredienti di questo spassoso film britannico che mantiene sempre alto l'interesse dello spettatore e in cui l'horror è ben amalgamato all'umorismo.
