The film begins resoundingly with perhaps the most famous scene featuring Drew Barrimore. The girl, at that moment alone in the house, answers a call on her phone (made by a serial killer)... the caller, after tormenting her with a movie quiz, concerning horror movies, chases her down and kills her mercilessly.
The masked killer's real target is poor Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), a diligent student living in the quiet town of Woodsboro. The girl is being stalked by this killer a year after the death of her mother, who was killed in a chilling manner.
This haunting situation leads the girl to recant testimony that nails Cotton Weary (Liev Schreiber) in prison. The man has been accused, by Sidney himself, of her mother's murder.
The young student, particularly tense and agitated by the situation, begins to suspect everyone: her boyfriend (the charming Skett Ulrich), her school principal (Henry Winkler, the famous Fonzie from Happy days), and even her friends.
Meanwhile, as the hunt for the rampaging killer continues, some boys are literally "mowed down"...
The murderous maniac's aim is to eliminate Sidney in excruciating torment, and for this he reserves her as his last victim.
If there is something that really is not missing from the film, it is the blood spilled by the boys killed in different, but always terrible and violent, ways.
The success of this U.S.-produced film, with the screenplay by the great Kevin Williamson, sparked a series of imitations, including the famous Urban Legend strand.
Wes Craven makes a small masterpiece with this suspenseful and highly engaging film.
Scream, with a soundtrack by Alice Cooper, Nick Cave and Marco Beltrami, is undoubtedly a cult of the new teen-horror current.
The killer's mask (inspired by the Scream) is one of the most famous, tied with Jason Voorhees' and Michael Myers'...
If the phone rings and the caller asks, "What's your favorite horror movie?" ... get your mind right and answer correctly.... Or there will be serious trouble!
