According to reports by Hollywood Reporter, the celebrated Russell Crowe (Gladiator, The Wrong Day) will star in The Pope's Exorcist, the new horror film by Julius Avery (Overlord), who describes it as "a dream come true."
Filming is scheduled to start in September in Ireland.
L'attore, che presto vedremo al cinema nei panni di Zeus in Thor: Love and Thunder, interpreterà Padre Amorth (1925-2016), l'esorcista italiano che ha dichiarato di aver effettuato circa 70.000 esorcismi dal 1986 al 2007. L'uomo di Chiesa inoltre ha affermato di essersi trovato, un centinaio di volte, di fronte a vere e proprie possessioni demoniache e di aver avuto a che fare, in genere, con casi di disturbi demoniaci o malattie mentali.
Hollywood Reporter inoltra riporta che Screen Gems aveva già acquisito i diritti sulla vita di Padre Amorth da Michael Patrick Kaczmarek e dalla media company gesuita Loyola Productions. Nell'accordo era inclusa anche la possibilità di attingere ai due libri di memorie scritti dall'esorcista ovvero “An exorcist tells" e "New Tales of an Exorcist".

Ricordiamo che, nel 2017, anche William Friedkin (L'esorcista) ha dedicato un documentario a Padre Amorth: The Devil and Father Amorth.
