Inspired by Jean-Jacques Rousseau's unfinished work of the same name, the award-winning (rightly) Fantasies of a lonely walker (Italy - 2014) by Paolo Gaudio is a black fairy tale, a fantasy film with dark veins, shot partly with real actors (live action) and partly with the stop-motion animation technique (the animated puppets are made of plasticine), again by the director and screenwriter.
Paolo Gaudio esordisce con un lungometraggio coinvolgente e che appassiona per la sua varietà e per il meticoloso lavoro con cui quest'opera cinematografica è stata realizzata. Il film sembra infatti contenere il cuore e l'anima di un regista di cui abbiamo già avuto modo di apprezzare i lavori in altri film italiani (Phantasmagoria, P.O.E. Poetry of Eerie - episodio "The Black Cat"). Opera in cui non passa inosservata la sua fervida immaginazione e fantasia.
In Fantasies of a lonely walker, le tre storie che si sfiorano e che si intrecciano sono visivamente incantevoli e permettono allo spettatore di lasciarsi andare, rapito da un'avventura cinematografica dal fascino inestimabile e che invoglia a più visioni.
Affascinante, magico e avvolto da preziose note malinconiche, il mondo proposto da Paolo Gaudio è una brillante evasione dalla realtà , un luogo in cui un po' tutti vorrebbero perdersi identificandosi in uno o in tutti gli strepitosi personaggi che lo popolano: dallo scrittore chiuso nel suo seminterrato (insieme al Necromante) al piccolo nel bosco, da Theo alla sua amica Choe.
Innovative and distinctive, Fantasies of a lonely walker è sicuramente un'imperdibile avventura oscura, un rassicurante bagliore nel buio tunnel dell'odierno cinema italiano.
Protagonists of Fantasies of a lonely walker are three characters from different eras. It is 1876 and Jean Jacques Renou (Luca Lionello) is a poor old writer living in a dingy basement. The man begins to write "Fantasticities of a Lonely Stroller," a coming-of-age novel that is also a fantasy cookbook.
Theo (Lorenzo Monaco), on the other hand, is a young philosophy major of our times who is passionate about unfinished books, including Renou's. Enraptured by the novel, the boy decides he wants to realize "Fantasticheria No. 23," the last recipe written by the poet and leading to an extraordinary place known by the name Vacuitas. At his side will be his friend Choe (Nicoletta Cefaly).
The third story, on the other hand, is about a child lost in a timeless forest. It is about the main character in the book that writer Renou is writing and Theo is reading.
The cast includes Luca Lionello, Lorenzo Monaco, Nicoletta Cefaly, Alessia Alciati, Angélique Cavallari, Fabiano Lioi, Fabrizio Ferracane and Selene Rosiello. Director Domiziano Cristopharo (House of Flesh Mannequins, Doll Syndrome) also appears among the actors.
The curated photography is by Sandro Magliano while the effective special effects are by Leonardo Cruciano.
Fantasies of a lonely walker is the winner of several awards, including: "Grand Prix" at the 2014 La Samain du cinéma fantastique festival; "Best World Film" at the 2015 Boston Science Fiction Film Festival; "Audience Award" at Fantastic Cinema, Little Rock; "Mario Bava Award" and "Best First Feature" at the Rome Fantafestival; "Best Film" and "Special Antonio Margheriti Award" at ToHorror Film Fest.

Fantasies of a lonely walker has been available on DVD since March 2017, distributed by CG Entertainment. L'edizione proposta, corredata da un esclusivo booklet (contenente 3 storie inedite di Gaudio e illustrate da Gianluca Maurotti e la mostra ispirata al film), si presenta curata nei minimi dettagli. Soddisfacenti anche i contenuti speciali presenti nel DVD tra cui, oltre al trailer, risulta molto interessante l'intervista fatta al regista da Luca Ruocco (il capo del sito italiano InGenereCinema nonché il selezionatore del Fantafestival presso cui il film di Gaudio ha vinto il "Premio Mario Bava come Migliore Opera Prima"). Tra i contenuti extra segnaliamo anche l'imperdibile "Breakdown Illusion" relativo agli effetti speciali del film.
