FIFTH CHAPTER - It is still unclear what it is that has decreed the success of the film saga of Resident Evil but, for one reason or another, the franchise made it to the fourth episode and, as expected (and suggested by the ending of Resident Evil: Afterlife), is preparing to return to the big screens a fifth time. Perhaps it is thanks to the brand inherited from the famous video game saga? Perhaps it is thanks to the presence of the beautiful Milla Jovovich in the cast? Hard to say with absolute certainty, the fact is. Resident Evil: Afterlife, chapter number four in the series that debuted in theaters last Sept. 10, grossed a total of nearly $300 million ($60 million in North America plus $236 million in the rest of the world) against the $60 spent on production. The mathematical difference is more than enough reason to push Sony Screen Gems to set, well in advance, a release date for the fifth episode: September 14, 2012!
Of course, we know absolutely nothing about Resident Evil 5, although we are almost certain that Milla Jovovich will return to the leading role, probably directed by her husband Paul W.S. Anderson (however, committed to the project as a producer). A mystery related to the next Resident Evil: will it be directed in stereoscopy or by employing cheaper and more traditional means? We await the first information and, with it, the inevitable indiscretions about the project.
