Initially set for Oct. 12 in Italy, the release date of Poor creatures! has been postponed until a later date in our country while in the U.S. it has been delayed for three months.
However, the film will make its competition debut at the Venice Film Festival to be held from August 30 to September 9 at the Venice Lido.
Written by Tony McNamara and directed by Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster, The Sacrifice of the Sacred Deer), Poor creatures! (aka Poor Things) is a film with sci-fi and horror overtones produced by Searchlight. The film is the film adaptation of the novel Poor things (1992) by Alasdair Gray.
The film stars Emma Stone (Welcome to Zombieland), Mark Ruffalo (Avengers:Infinity War) and Willem Dafoe (Streets of Fire, The Lighthouse) and is rated "Rated-R" for strong and pervasive sexual content, graphic nudity, disturbing material, blood, violence and foul language.
The story is set in the Victorian age and focuses on horror but also on love and scientific discovery reminiscent of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Poor Things in fact features Bella (Emma Stone), a young woman brought back to life by Dr. Baxter, an eccentric yet brilliant scientist (Willem Dafoe).
Eager to learn and open up to the world, Bella runs away with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slimy lawyer who leads a dissolute life. The man will drag her into overwhelming adventures as Bella tries to fight for equality and emancipation.
