2016 saw director Chad Ferrin (The Ghouls, Someone knocks on the door), busy directing two new horror films namely. The Chair (here our preview review) e Parasites. After The Chair, the claustrophobic film about inmates tortured and tortured by prison guards as well as by the prison warden, we also had the pleasure of viewing and reviewing for the genre fanatics Parasites.
This is a survival horror, written by Ferrin himself and featuring three boys hunted by unscrupulous bums.
Chad Ferrin pays homage to John Carpenter and his most distinctive filmography, bringing to the stage an evil and violent story in which the only monsters are the derelicts of humankind namely those homeless people whom society has coldly marginalized. Parasites ci mostra il sogno infranto di un gruppo di ragazzi spensierati ai quali il destino ha riservato un'inspiegabile quanto ingiusta discesa all'inferno attraverso un turbine di sadismo gratuito e finanche la morte.
It will be during a car ride, in fact, that three friends get lost on the city's seedy streets. Here they will become the favorite pastime of a vicious gang of homeless derelicts headed by Wilco (Robert Miano). For the luckiest of the three young men, that night will turn into a desperate struggle for survival.
Parasites spreads out before the viewer, from dubito, a carpet of inviting promise, so much so that even the most wary followers of the director of 1997: Escape from New York. Unmistakable is Ferrin's desire to emulate John Carpenter and so also his typical films such as, in addition to the aforementioned Assault on Precinct 13, ad esempio. Il tema dell'assedio, la suspense che ne consegue e la claustrofobica consapevolezza della morte imminente sono caratteristiche però di una filmografia registica (quella di Carpenter) che definire didascalica è riduttivo. Calcarne le orme può così diventare un'arma a doppio taglio soprattutto qualora si oltrepassi quel sottile confine tra omaggio e plagio. In fase di scrittura, Ferrin sembra essersi dimenticato di non essere il regista di Prince of Darkness and so ends up coming up with a film that, yes is a valuable exercise in style but one that suffers the blows of easy as well as unfortunate comparisons.
Ruled by commendable direction and photography, Parasites was actually built on a naïve script that was not very solid and bemoaned the lack of plot twists that could serve as a hook per attirare maggiormente l'attenzione dello spettatore. Durante la visione si ha sempre l'impressione di guardare un film minore di Carpenter, in cui tutti gli elementi siano come sbiaditi dalla loro potenza originale.
La stessa musica a cura di Matthew Olivo, eccelsa, altro non è che un irritante desiderio di emulare i migliori anni '70 e '80. Una synthwave che più che rapportarsi alle influenze carpenteriane, balza proprio indietro fino agli anni '80 per usarne le stesse identiche sonorità reimpastate poi in motivi pressoché clonati.
Parasites non è un brutto film, anzi, ma come spiegato soffre dell'inevitabile paragone con le pellicole a cui si ispira. Le promesse iniziali portano lo spettatore in uno stato di aspettativa tale da pretendere la regia e le storie di John Carpenter. Nè più, nè meno. Chad Ferrin però non riesce a caratterizzare i suoi personaggi come avremmo voluto. Seppur siano presenti characters interessanti, questi non hanno goduto di un background all'altezza. La violenza che dovrebbe rappresentare le fondamenta dell'opera, non è mai esplicitata e nemmeno è percettibile come impalpabile costante nefasta come ad esempio è in The Warriors.
Chad Ferrin should still be credited with outclassing modern works such as those in the franchise The Purge, to which Parasites, by thematic type, can be easily approached.
Il finale del film riesce comunque a riottenere l'attenzione e la fiducia del pubblico grazie a una svolta "cattiva" e originale. Dopo la visione, lo spettatore viene letteralmente assalito da piacevoli sensazioni, date soprattutto dall'atmosfera di Parasites in cui l'abbandono, il degrado e la sporcizia fanno da sfondo a una storia in cui gli ambienti sono lo specchio della fredda collettività , ormai disumanizzata.
The cast includes Robert Miano, Burt Culver, Eddie Kehler, Wolfie Trausch, Jeffrey Decker, Carson Nicely, Rich Lee, Tim Halpin, Art Roberts, Suzanne Sumner Ferry, and Robert Rhine. Also joining them is Joseph Pilato, the actor who played Rhodes in the Day of the Dead of Romero and who in Charrin's film is the homeless Wilde, one of the most successful characters in Parasites.
