From March 6 to 8, the Cineteca di Bologna is releasing in theaters the cult film Warriors of the night (aka The Warriors) with the "Cinema Ritrovato" project.
Directed in 1979 by Walter Hill (Lost Roads, Danko), this epic masterpiece is based on the novel of the same name written by Sol Yurick in 1965, itself inspired by Xenophon's Anabasis.
"I found interesting the idea of not looking at a gang in terms of a social problem, but from another point of view, that of their heroism understood in the classical sense of the term. [...] I also liked the idea of telling a story from Greek history. It was the Anabasis set in a futuristic, science fiction world [...] When you bring science fiction to life there is often a propensity to abstract it altogether. I thought the challenge would be to make it realistic and fantastic at the same time; I wanted to combine those two elements to make it a dark comic book." Walter Hill
The protagonists of the story are the Warriors (Warriors), a Coney Island gang headed for the large gathering of all New York youth gangs convened in the Bronx. On that occasion, however, the Warriors are falsely accused of the death of the leader of a respected rival gang, thus finding themselves having to escape ambushes from all the gangs and the police as they cross the entire city to return to Brooklyn.
Warriors of the night was released in Italian movie theaters in August 1979 and was banned to minors under the age of 18 because of its very violent content.
In the cast: Michael Beck, James Remar, Dorsey Wright, Brian Tyler, David Harris, Tom McKitterick, Marcelino Sánchez, Terry Michos, Deborah Van Valkenburgh, Roger Hill, andDavid Patrick Kelly.
