According to The Hollywood Reporter, Australian screenwriter, actor, and director Leigh Whannell (Upgrade) is involved in an ambitious project.
In addition to directing the reboot of The Invisible Man (link to news story), Leigh Whannell, known for his work on the franchises Saw and Insidious by James Wan, will also write the screenplay for the remake of 1997: Escape from New York, a cult classic directed by John Carpenter back in 1981 and starring
Kurt Russell.
This task was entrusted to him by 20th Century Fox.
At the moment, no director has been appointed for the remake, but the possibility that Whannell himself may take on the role has not been ruled out.
John Carpenter will appear in the crew as executive producer of the film.
