Angela is a young TV reporter on the show "While You Sleep" who, along with cameraman Pablo, is preparing to film a live nightly report on the lives of Barcelona's firefighters.
The quiet in the barracks is shattered by the sudden phone call from an elderly woman who is locked in her house.
Pablo's camera and Angela's voice will guide a nightmarish live television...
Jaume Balaguerò (Fragile) draws heavily from the metahorror strand whose progenitor is undoubtedly The Blair Witch Project, adding something extra to the genre: to the cold, detached look of the reportage he combines an expertly structured screenplay and the skill in keeping the tension high at all times.
Thus the lives of a presenter and a cameraman intent on documenting the lives of firefighters covering the night shift change abruptly the moment they enter an apartment building from which a distress call has come. From this moment we will witness a long series of twists and turns that frighteningly involve the viewer until the disturbing and stunning finale. The talented Balaguerò knows how to jolt audiences through a series of genre tools: tight editing, action, claustrophobic moments, anthropophagy, and scenes of extreme violence that know how to give horror after horror the brio of terror to lovers of this genre.
The originality of Rec definitely lies in the excellent combination of zombie-movie and docu-fiction.
