Just two years after the release of the beautiful Kivenkantaja, Moonsorrow are back in the news with this new Verisäkeet, already in the Finnish top 20 just a week after release.
Although this review begins in the most mundane of ways, as if foreshadowing a list of words such as "commercial" or "useless," you can be sure that the first few seconds of this album will not do as much.Verisäkeet stands as the most epic Viking Black Metal album of the year and as one of the greatest masterpieces of the vein.
The five very long tracks on this release with a total duration of 70 minutes (just know that it will not be enough for you) collect the legacy of the best Scandinavian black metal such as Emperor's "In The Nightside Eclipse," Burzum's "Hvys Lyset Tar Oss," and not least that great and majestic Viking composition entitled "Hammerheart" by the late Bathory.
You will come across intros and outros that take you back in time to snowy moors, theaters of fierce battles in the name of Odin and Walhalla; thought-provoking and poignant acoustic guitars, slow, haunting drumming that stands to consolidate an imposing musical composition (heir to the best Quorthon) and a raw, elemental guitar structure.
The poignant vocals in full Burzum style, acidic and despairing only amplify the level of pathos with which the work is evilly imbued from the first to the last second.
"Haaska" and its slow opening into a dark and unfamiliar dimension, with its pained drumming clearly inspired by "One Rode to Asa Bay" is surely the best track.
Five anthems to paganism that will make people forget about Finntroll and Ensiferum, for an album to be listened to and carefully evaluated in order to be able to grasp its infinite nuances.
