Model Hunger è il film che segna un sorprendente esordio alla regia della scream queen Debbie Rochon, attrice canadese molto nota nel mondo del cinema indipendente horror, soprattutto per quello targato Troma. La sua filmografia vanta più di 230 film e abbraccia un arco temporale di circa trent'anni. Debbie Rochon è per questo considerata la regina del cinema indie, una veterana dell'horror (per quanto riguarda la recitazione) che per la prima volta si è cimentata alla regia.
His Model Hunger is a low-budget independent film, but one that has the potential to go beyond tight financial constraints. We are therefore talking about the outstanding performance of Lynn Lowry (Shivers, La città verrà distrutta all'alba), the protagonist of the film i.e. the spearhead of Model Hunger e anche di un'interessante sceneggiatura (a cura di James Morgart).
In Model Hunger, Ginny (Lynn Lowry) is an older woman who has never accepted her failure as a young woman, both as an actress and as a model. The anger accumulated over the years has turned her into an out-of-control woman blinded by a strong desire for revenge. Her strange attitudes will make her new neighbors, Debbie (Tiffany Shepis) and Sal (Carmine Capobianco), suspicious.
Il film punta sulle ambizioni e sui sogni infranti. Fonde il passato con il futuro, in una storia in cui i personaggi vivono un presente monocolore faccia a faccia con una realtà fredda e monotona a cui molti si sono ormai rassegnati ad eccezione delle nuove leve, aspiranti attrici e star che riescono ancora a immaginare un avvenire migliore. Intanto, il programma televisivo altamente trash "Suzi's Secret" (condotto da una divertente Suzi Lorraine) fa compagnia alle loro vite vuote, inculcando nei loro occhi e nelle loro orecchie il degrado.
Con la sua brillante interpretazione, Lynn Lowry diventa il fulcro di quest'opera. Il suo è un personaggio camaleontico e complesso che incarna diverse personalità le quali si incrociano e si amalgamano fra di loro. Lynn Lowry interpreta una donna anziana, dolce e premurosa, sensuale e affascinante, scontrosa e diffidente, pericolosa e profondamente disturbata. L'apice della sua bravura lo si riscontra nella sua trasformazione in una sbalorditiva e seducente Mistress assassina che, nell'atto di uccidere, sembra quasi esorcizzare le delusioni che la vita le ha riservato. Sfoghi, i suoi, che esternano tormenti, dolore e tanta rabbia repressa che culmina nell'omicidio.
Her ferocity grows as does her sadism in performing cuts, amputations, hammering and quartering at the hands of her victims considered by her to be guilty of guarding a dream or desire. Of note in this regard are the good special effects and make-up by Ingrid Okola.
Ovviamente valida anche la prova recitativa di un'altra scream queen che affianca Lynn Lowry ovvero Tiffany Shepis (Tromeo & Juliet, Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV, Night of the Demons - remake) than in Model Hunger plays neighbor Debbie. Also notable is the characterization of this character who comes across as apathetic toward life from the start. Through fashbacks and dreams, she then gains depth and becomes the protagonist of a chilling finale.
Wrapping up the soundtrack that accompanies the film and is by the well-known American composer Harry Manfredini (saga Friday the 13th, The swamp monster, The hills have eyes II, Helen's House...).
