Mécanix, il film canadese scritto e diretto dal visionario Rémy M.Larochelle nel 2003, è una fiaba nera della durata di circa un'ora che, in un mélange di generi fra cui l'animazione (con la tecnica della stop-motion), il fantasy, l’horror e lo sperimentale, presenta una visione della vita decadente, cupa e claustrofobica. Intinta in una fotografia color seppia (Mélissa Hebert, Samuel Cloutier) e pervasa da suoni macabri (ad opera del direttore del suono Daniel Lagacé), lamenti, voci distorte, echi e urla disturbanti, la storia apre la strada a più interpretazioni.
In Mécanix (attualmente l'unico film scritto e diretto da Rémy M.Larochelle) ci si lascia trasportare da immagini terrificanti, in cui sono immortalate creature mostruose animate con la tecnica della stop-motion e che comunicano con gesti, bisbigli e lamenti.
What is depicted is a lifeless, dreamless universe in which the bio-mechanical creatures (for which we emphasize the skill and laudable imagination in making them) that govern it, force the last human beings into slavery. Such creatures fear nothing, only the embryo of the universe, the origin of everything and thus of life itself and which is hidden in the bowels of the last man born free. The scientist working for these monsters will start vivisecting every human being on the planet in order to find the embryo and destroy it once and for all.
In questa dimensione buia e contorta, in cui non c'è spazio per la luce e per melodie ma che è carica di un buio appestante circondato da un rumore persistente, assistiamo a continui esperimenti durante i quali vengono anche eseguite eviscerazioni (non mancherà un autosventramento), volte alla ricerca dell'embrione.
In Mécanix è stato ricreato un inferno in cui si riesce quasi a percepire l'odore della morte e che come tale, tormenta visivamente e uditivamente lo spettatore.
I continui ingranaggi (e i relativi rumori martellanti) che sembrano mandare avanti la folle ricerca delle creature bio-meccaniche, per un certo verso potrebbero rappresentare, metaforicamente, il "meccanismo" di un cervello in crisi, quindi una visione folle del protagonista, il suo inferno personale popolato da mostri interiori.
Or, simply, Mécanix could be translated as the surreal and metaphysical vision of life and death according to the screenwriter and director. What is certain is that Mécanix pulls the viewer into an unhealthy vortex of images and sounds to lead them to question the cycle of life and death.
Mécanix Is a wonderful surreal horror journey to get lost in.
