MarebitoMasuoka is a freelance video amateur (Shinya Tsukamoto) obsessed with finding images of pure terror and therefore decides to descend into the dungeons of Tokyo. An elderly wanderer warns him that the Dero, very evil creatures, dwell in those places.
However, Masuoka is not intimidated and continues his journey until he meets a chained naked girl (Tomomi Miyashita). He decides to take her to his home but the woman does not eat, does not drink, and stays awake for a maximum of three hours....

Definitely metaphysical film directed by the director of The Grudge and Ju-On in eight days and on a shoestring budget.
The first part of the film is very magical, mysterious: Masuoka's journey is a Dantean descent into the meanderings of his obsessions and the life-death pair, complete with a Virgilian guide who admonishes and instructs him.
La psychosis of the protagonist is such that it alters all reality, to make every passage of the film enigmatic and symbolic.
However, after the meeting with the girl, the film becomes much more linear until the hallucinatory and unpredictable ending.
The overall result is a very experimental, interesting film that cannot be defined strictly in any horror canon.
However, the pace is a bit slow and ambitions are not always well fulfilled by results, but Marebito Is a film of undoubted value.
