Maldoror is the title of the thriller genre film by Fabrice Du Welz, a Belgian director and screenwriter known for directing the horror Calvaire, Vinyan and Hallelujah.
Maldoror addresses the issue of pedophilia based on a true story that takes its cue from a crime case that shook Belgium in the 1990s and is known as the 'Affaire Dutroux': Marc Dutroux (born 1956) is a Belgian serial killer, rapist and child molester, nicknamed the "Monster of Marcinelle." Since 2004, the man has been serving a life sentence for kidnapping, torturing, raping and murdering, between 1985 and 1996, six girls/girls aged 8 to 19 with the complicity of his ex-wife.
The film is currently in pre-production, and the cast has already been confirmed to include Benoit Poelvoorde, star of Inexorable (2021), Du Welz's recent film.
Also in this project, the director is again collaborating with Belgian producer Jean-Yves Roubin (Titane) and his Frakas Production.
According to what the latter revealed, the story of Maldoror will focus on a fictional character namely a policeman who, obsessed with the case, will set out on Dutroux's trail.
The producer went on to describe Maldoror as a thriller/noir genre film similar to Zodiac by David Fincher.
