Malakai - Blood Nightmare (aka Malakay - Nightmare in Blood and Nightmare in Blood) is a vampire movie directed by John Stanley in 1977.
In the film, Jerry Walter plays the great Malakai, an actor who has become famous for his vampire roles and has been invited by fans to a horror convention in San Francisco. The organizers also contact his two agents, and meanwhile, strange murders begin to occur in the area. The long trail of deaths appears to have been caused by Malakai himself, a vampire in his own right.
The story of Malakai - Blood Nightmare dà spazio alla figura mitologica del vampiro non trascurando citazioni a icone horror che rispondono ai nomi di Cristopher Lee e Bela Lugosi. All'entità vampirica si aggiunge una componente reale ovvero i trafugatori di cadaveri William Burke e William Hare, noti come gli "Assassini di West Port", le cui azioni risalgono al 1800. Nel film di John Stanley però i due oscuri figuri corrispondono agli agenti del vampiro, i quali hanno il compito di procurargli sangue per il suo nutrimento. Si scoprirà che è proprio Malakai a mantenere i due assassini in vita grazie alla sua esperienza di mad doctor nazista.
To this mixture that draws on reality as well as fiction (in literature and film), there is also a presence that can be associated with Van Helsing, another fictional character in the novel Dracula (1897) di Bram Stoker. Trattasi dell'ebreo che dà la caccia a Malakai proprio per il suo passato legato al nazismo.
Malakai - Blood Nightmare è un'interessante rilettura del mito del vampiro a cui vengono mescolati più elementi come Burke/Hare, mad doctor e nazismo. Presenta dunque una storia forse un po' troppo ingarbugliata e macchinosa ma che tuttavia riesce (in parte) a esercitare il proprio fascino sebbene alcuni passaggi risultino noiosi.
Malakai also sins in the staging of the murders (fairly restrained), stingy in their execution (the crimes are either carried out in dark scenes or show nothing heinous). Jerry Walter's acting performance is convincing.
