Sam Raimi is not only producing the reboot of the psychological horror classic Magic (1978), he's also set to direct the film.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the filmmaker will return to the horror genre with a new take on the cult movie centered around a ventriloquist and his terrifying dummy, Fats.
The project is being developed by Lionsgate and reunites Raimi with Mark Swift and Damian Shannon, the writers behind Freddy vs. Jason and the recent Send Help. Roy Lee, Chris Hammond, and Tim Sullivan are also attached as producers.
Originally directed in 1978 by Richard Attenborough and adapted from the novel by William Goldman, Magic starred Anthony Hopkins as a ventriloquist whose rise to fame is tied to his puppet Fats, an unsettling figure that gradually pulls him into a spiral of madness.
With its tense, grounded approach and absence of camp or exaggerated tones, the original film has become one of the most respected horror movies centered on ventriloquism, thanks in part to Hopkins’ performance and the disturbing presence of the dummy itself.
For that reason, Magic is also featured in our list of the The Best Evil Doll Horror Movies.
At the moment, no plot details or official release date for the reboot have been revealed.
