In Lovers beyond the grave il doppio ruolo Muriel/Jenny è interpretato da Barbara Steele, icona horror nota per le sue performance nei film gotici italiani degli anni '60 e che aveva già avuto un dual role (Asa Vajda/Katia Vajda) nell'inarrivabile The Demon's Mask (1960) by Mario Bava.
In this Gothic film by Caiano, the magnificent Steele splits, releasing into the story two opposing and contrasting personalities that at the same time seem to balance each other out: an adulterous woman who ghostly returns from the dead for revenge and a naive, almost angelic woman who is the victim of plots in the world of the living. Steele beautifully embodies good and evil once again proving her extraordinary acting skills.
Mario Caiano dirige un potente horror gotico che ingloba i classici canoni del genere, avendo cura di regalare allo spettatore fantasiose e violente sequenze di torture e di morte (riservate ai due amanti) in cui confluiscono picchi di sadismo e masochismo che sfociano nella malvagità e nella crudeltà . Il tutto avvolto da un'eccellente e morbosa atmosfera valorizzata da una consona fotografia che impreziosisce il bianco e il nero di questa pellicola sicuramente adatta all'estimatore classico del genere.
Dr. Stephen Arrowsmith (Paul Muller) is an unfaithful man and cheats on his wife Muriel (Barbara Steele) with housekeeper Solange (Helga Liné). In turn, the consort also has an extramarital affair with the gardener, and once the betrayal is discovered, the doctor tortures and kills the woman (along with her lover), convinced that he will inherit all her property. Muriel, however, has given her possessions to her sister Jenny and, determined to take the inheritance, the Doctor marries her and then takes possession and shares everything with Solange. Preventing him from carrying out his diabolical plan will be the ghosts of Muriel and David who, blinded by revenge, will haunt him.
