Liver is a short film of about 20 minutes directed by Federico Greco, the Roman director who has behind him important film works such as The mystery of Lovecraft - Road to L., Nuit Americhèn, E.N.D. and who is currently busy directing Angelika With Crisula Stafida.
The multi-award-winning Liver has at its base a perverse story steeped in pure madness, elements that emerge from the very beginning thanks in part to the very grand and hypnotic performance of Octavian Blitch (Shadow, In the Market), who, by the way, was also in charge of the film's screenplay and production as well as acting.
Octavian Blitch casts himself perfectly in the role of Harry Brompton, nicknamed "Liver" by the press for eating the livers of two of his victims after killing them with a golf club. Interned in a mental institution in Yorkshire, he is released for good behavior after eighteen years. His goal is to take revenge on prosecutor McWilliams who had convicted him. Going to the man's mansion, Liver will carry out his revenge by taking out his wrath on Rachel, the prosecutor's daughter.
A single location and only two actors (Octavian Blitch and Natasha Czertok) for this intense journey into madness and pain in which Octavian Blitch rides the scene with chameleon-like manner and with quotable dialogue that draws on films such as Pulp Fiction, The Snatch and especially A Clockwork Orange. Indeed, the character played by Blitch also echoes some of the movements and expressions of the famous protagonist Alex DeLarge from Kubrick's film, a director to whom Federico Greco himself dedicated the documentary Stanley and Us back in 1999.
Interwoven with this work infused with citationism is the Roman director's originality and professionalism, elements that find their fullest expression in the theatrical-like staging and in the dreamlike, delirious final solution that unravels in a fascinating, devilish video clip embellished with the song "Signal to Noise" by Peter Gabriel.
Not to be outdone is the apt use of the music that accompanies this remarkable work.
