Basato sull'omonimo personaggio dei fumetti DC Comics creato da Bob Kane, Jerry Robinson e Bill Finger, Joker moves away from the DC Extended Universe. Il film infatti è la storia delle origini del disturbato Arthur Fleck, un uomo che si troverà ad essere relegato ai margini di una società violenta durante gli anni '80 a Gotham City.
Trama: Gotham City, 1981. Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) è un aspirante cabarettista il cui scarso successo lo obbliga a lavorare di giorno come clown. Nel tentativo di ribellarsi ad una società che lo emargina, l'uomo finisce per innescare una serie di eventi che lo trasformerà in una delle peggiori menti criminali della storia di Gotham City.
