Italian horror You Die - Download the app, then die (2018) is Official Selection at Screamfest in Los Angeles, which will take place Oct. 9-18. You Die is the only Italian film in competition and will be screened on Oct. 14.
You Die is an independent production, a low-budget film shot entirely in Turin and directed by a trio of young directors consisting of Alessandro Antonaci, Stefano Mandalà and Daniel Lascar.
In You Die, the cursed app at the center of the story recalls the recent Bedevil - Don't install it (2017) while the curse triggered by the application refers back to It Follows (2014). In fact, the film is about a cursed app that kills within 24 hours the owner of the phone on which it was installed unless the owner in turn downloads it to someone else's device, resetting the countdown and thus gaining another 24 hours of life.
This horror film based on demonic presences and paranormal murders, however, brings the horror genre into confrontation with augmented reality precisely because of this app, which trespasses into the real world by giving the viewer a chance to play with the story.
The realization of the project required a budget of €140,000, 9 months of writing, 29 days of filming and 7 months of post-production.
The funds were raised primarily through the personal contribution of Daniel Lascar and the financial and technical participation of Francesco Scrufari and Simone Offredo, both CEOs of Ulixe, an atypical software house founded in Turin in 2001 that invested in the project by also making the film's official app.
In the cast of You Die - Download the app, then die (aka You Die - Get the App, Then Die): Teodoro Garruto, Micol Damilano, Carola Cudemo, Ja'Michael Darnell, William Angiuli, Erica Landolfi, Rocco Marazzita, Daniele Marmi, Alice Piano, Simone Valentino and Simone Morett.
The screenplay of the film is by the directors themselves (Alessandro Antonaci, Stefano Mandalà and Daniel Lascar).
