Insidious - The Last Key (aka Insidious: The Last Key) is the fourth installment in the horror franchise (chronologically it is the second in the series) conceived by James Wan. Written by Leigh Whanell (former screenwriter of the first three chapters and director of Insidious 3), the film is directed by Adam Robitel, an American director who made his mark with his worthwhile and unforgettable horror film about demonic possession The Taking of Deborah Logan (movie review).
As per Insidious 3, we are faced with a weak product, a film that tries to emulate the murky spirit with which this saga was born. With Insidious - The Last Key we are instead a far cry from the suspenseful and horror-filled atmospheres of the first two chapters directed by James Wan (who appears here as a producer along with Jason Blum). The result is thus an unmemorable film.
The protagonist of the story is Elise Rainer (Lin Shaye), the paranormal investigator who is able to see deceased people. In Adam Robitel's film, the woman will have to confront her past by confronting the demonic spirit that has always haunted her family home.
In Insidious - The Last Key we focus on this perpetually troubled character, investigating his origins.
I primi venti minuti introduttivi del film sono dedicati all'infanzia infelice della donna, parte che si rivela estremamente riuscita (insieme ai flashback che si intervallano nella storia) proprio perchè dà il via ad un profondo stato ansioso scatenato da situazioni di violenza domestica. In questo senso ritroviamo il talento, già riscontrato in The Taking of Deborah Logan, by Adam Robitel. As in his film about demonic possession, in Insidious - The Last Key il regista si dimostra abile nel creare momenti da brivido all'interno di un contesto familiare.
La tensione purtroppo poi si attenua facendo scattare la monotonia quando l'obiettivo si sposta su Elise Rainer adulta e viene completamente annullata da uno sviluppo della storia poco coinvolgente a cui partecipano personaggi quasi abbozzati (a parte la protagonista) o addirittura superficiali (Tucker e Specs). Questi ultimi due, in particolare, tendono a sdrammatizzare troppo un contesto orrorifico già di per sè molto debole.
In addition to the prologue (which foreshadowed a film with great potential) and several flashbacks to Elise's character, Insidious - The Last Key ha comunque altri pregi. Il film è indubbiamente caratterizzato da una regia e da una fotografia efficaci e da effetti speciali incisivi. Inoltre l'entità , sebbene poco approfondita, è dotata di un certo fascino estetico.
As a result. Insidious - The Last Key sia un capitolo riuscito solo a metà proprio perché perde il suo spirito originale che regna nella parte introduttiva per poi lasciare spazio ad una storia che scade nella monotonia, nell'anonimato e che offre ben poco di raccapricciante. Tuttavia gli appassionati di questa saga potrebbero apprezzare questo capitolo conclusivo.

Insidious - The Last Key (USA - 2018) is available on home video from May 9, 2018 thanks to Universal Pictures Home Entertainment Italia, which released it on DVD and Blu-ray.
In particular, the Blu-ray version is offered with classic packaging and features very sharp audio tracks (both Italian and original English). The video compartment is also impeccable.
Nel disco inoltre è presente una corposa e interessante sezione dedicata agli extra. Oltre al "Finale alternativo", sono presenti "8 agghiaccianti scene eliminate" accompagnate da "Addentriamoci nell'Altrove", "Diventare Elise" e "Il nuovo demone - Ecco le chiavi".
