In 2002 Tommy Lee Wallace wrote and directed The hunter of darkness (aka Vampires: Los Muertos), the sequel to the famous Vampires (USA - 1998) di John Carpenter. Con The hunter of darkness Wallace si riallaccia alla storia del primo capitolo non per proseguirla ma quasi per ricalcarne le orme. Il regista infatti non solo riprende temi, sequenze e ambientazioni dell'horror carpenteriano ma dimostra di avere poca fantasia anche con i personaggi.
Nei panni del cacciatore di vampiri (ruolo che nel 1998 era stato affidato a James Wood) troviamo infatti uno scialbo Jon Bon Jovi la cui performance risulta poco convincente. L'unica variante è il nemico da sconfiggere: se nel vampire movie del 1998 è un vampiro di sesso maschile, in quello del 2002 il nemico è una feroce vampira. Messe a confronto, le due storie sembrano identiche, tanto che, durante la visione de The hunter of darkness, one has the feeling of following a soulless remake rather than a sequel.
The hunter of darkness is thus an embarrassing sequel to a valid and important film in vampire cinematography. Devoid of original paths, it also presents a very weak pacing that prevents the emergence of suspenseful foci. Anonymous, The hunter of darkness has, as its only and small merit, only discrete special effects.
Plot: Derek Bliss (Jon Bon Jovi) is a tireless vampire hunter hired by a priest to track down and exterminate a group of bloodsuckers in Mexico. Aided by a group of fellow hunters, Derek will set out on the trail of Una (Arly Jover), a dangerous vampire who yearns to take possession of a precious relic. The goal of the creatures of the night is to be able to expose themselves to daylight and thus become invulnerable to the sun.
The cast includes Jon Bon Jovi, Cristián de la Fuente, Natasha Gregson Wagner, Arly Jover, Darius McCrary, Diego Luna, Anilú Pardo, Honorato Magaloni, Juan Pablo Gamboa, Gabriel Casanova, and Javier Grajeda.
