According to Deadline, John Hillcoat (The Proposal, The Road, Lawless) will direct the remake of The grand inquisitor (aka Witchfinder General), the film directed by Michael Reeves in 1968.
The project was already announced two years ago by director Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive, The Neon Demon), here involved as producer along with Rupert Preston (through their Bynwr.com and Sunrise Films) and in collaboration with John Hillcoat's own Blank Films.
Instead, the screenplay will be by Jon Croker (The Woman In Black 2).

The story of the film takes its cue from Witchfinder General (di Ronald Bassett), romanzo vagamente ispirato a Matthew Hopkins (1620 - 1647), un avvocato inglese che sosteneva di aver ricevuto mandato ufficiale dal parlamento inglese per svolgere l'attività di inquisitore. Tale carica però non risulta venne mai ufficializzata.
