Eraserhead | Movie Review

Eraserhead - The mind that erases (1977) is a surreal, visionary and psychedelic film that tells the story of a couple who are progenitors of some sort of alien creature. This experimental masterpiece written and directed by David Lynch is a haunting vortex in which perverse images, noises and sounds give rise to psychedelic visions and feelings of various kinds. This is a film that could translate as a disturbing immersion in the meanderings of the human mind or as a disturbing and hallucinatory out-of-body journey of a visionary madman.

Shot in black and white and devoid of a linear story, this debut film by David Lynch is able to twist the viewer, enchanting, seducing and propelling him into an asphyxiating dimension where everything, suspended between dream and distorted reality, is born and dies in an alienating and claustrophobic setting, made even more haunting and oppressive by a soundtrack made of shrill sounds that open the door to paranoia and chaos.

eraserhead2In this maelstrom of delirium accentuated by great visual power of images and good use of sound, Eraserhead - The Erasing Mind is the mirror of irrationality in which every viewer can reflect himself or herself; it is an atrocious and interminable lucid dream.
Singular and enigmatic, Eraserhead is a distinct, claustrophobic, and impossible-to-forget cinematic work, but it is definitely not for everyone.

In the cast: Jack Nance, Charlotte Stewart, Allen Joseph, Jeanne Bates, Jack Fisk, Judith Anna Roberts, Lauren Near, Thomas Coulson, Neil Moran, John Monez, Hal Landon Jr. and Darwin Joston.
