La nutrita branca dedicata agli zombie movie occupa senz'altro gran parte nel cinema horror. In continua espansione, la cinematografia sui morti viventi annovera anche Empire State of the Dead (USA - 2016), the horror anthology conceived by Ron Bonk and paying homage to the filmography of George A. Romero.
The film consists of seven short films directed by New York-based filmmakers whose common thread is the early phase of a zombie outbreak that has affected several parts of the Big Apple.
Producing this choral film are Ron Bonk (SRS Cinema) and Jonathan Straiton, two people we have had the opportunity to speak positively about in regard to their films namely the crazy and funny She Kills of the former and the delusional and pleasantly disgusting Night of Something Strange (inserito tra l'altro nella nostra list of the best movies of 2016) of the second.
Plot of Empire State of the Dead: The zombie epidemic is spreading throughout the world. In New York, a small patrol of marines led by Sergeant Ritter (Joel Miscione), try to maintain order. In addition to fighting the living dead, however, the military will have to deal with rebel groups. Olen Ray (Wes Reid) in fact, the drug lord, is taking advantage of the chaos to try to rule the world. To succeed, the man prevents the government from restoring order by sabotaging relief efforts. The clash between Ritter and Ray will be inevitable.
As in all horror anthology films, the Empire State of the Dead consists of successful and less successful episodes and others that, in each case, immortalize different directorial styles with their relative merits and flaws. Nevertheless, the overall result of this low-budget product achieves sufficiency.
D'effetto è l'episodio cornice (con un bravissimo Wes Reid/Jonathan Straiton) a cura di Ron Bonk e Howard Gromero e che funge anche da collante alle altre storie.
Si contraddistingue per la sceneggiatura elaborata come per la sua complessità che lo rende senza ombra di dubbio il più impegnativo dell'antologia.
The spearhead of Empire State of the Dead è sicuramente "Necropath" di Joshua Reale. Questo segmento, il più macabro e marcio dei sette, gode di una storia innovativa e di una piacevole fotografia sui toldi caldi del rosso. Qui il protagonista (ben interpretato da Moe Isac) è un tossicodipendente squilibrato perso nel suo mondo fatto di droghe e violenza. Ammantato da un'atmosfera lugubre e triste, questo corto presenta anche zombie (lenti) efficaci che riescono a incutere un senso di malessere.
Interessante anche "Blessed are the Meek" di Matthew A. Peters, impreziosito dalla performance di Wayne W. Johnson (Cornelius in Night of Something Strange), qui nel ruolo di Draven, il leader del trio di psicopatici. Johnson infatti, completamente calato nella parte, riesce a rubare l'attenzione dello spettatore diventando il fulcro di interesse della storia. Rilevante anche la prova recitativa di Ryan Santiago e Greta Valkova, che in questo episodio sono gli altri due componenti del trio di criminali.
Raffinata è invece la regia di "What's the matter with Allison?" l'episodio in bianco e nero di Alec Bell.
Finally, the remaining four underwhelmed.

Empire State of the Dead will be distributed by SRS Cinema on Blu-ray limited edition (only 100 copies) starting April 11. On the same day, the film will also be available for cable TV through Gravitas Ventures.
The SRS Cinema-branded Blu-ray is menu-less but contains trailers for House Shark, She Kills and Night of Something Strange. In English, the film has good audio and video quality and is structured into six chapters whose titles are:
