The Orchard will distribute Eat (USA - 2013), the horror genre film focusing on self-harm and self-cannibalism, a little-covered topic of great impact for horror film fans. The release date of Eat for digital stores (Google Play, Amazon, iTunes, Vudu and the Xbox marketplace) is set for November 18, 2014. Eat is the first feature film by Jimmy Weber, who previously directed the short film Incubator. In addition to directing, the director also handled the screenplay and music for the film.
The protagonist of the story is Novella McClure (Meggie Maddock), a 30-year-old woman from Los Angeles whose acting career has been interrupted for some time now. In fact, it has been three years since she was last assigned a role. Her job failure breaks her down psychologically, leading her to close in on herself and find an outlet in her body. Isolated from the world and confined within the walls of her home, the young woman begins to self-inflict cuts that she later transforms into deep wounds. The martyrdom of her own body becomes like a drug for her and, unable to avoid hurting herself, Novella comes to feed on her own flesh.
The cast of Eat features Meggie Maddock (Butcher, M is for Martin, The Inner Room), Ali Frances, Maru Garcia, Jeremy Make, Dakota Pike, Josh Staab, Luke Sorge, John Schmidt and Jeff Maez. The film is produced by Annie Baker, while Jon Stevenson handled cinematography.
Below is an explicit trailer for the film in which one can appreciate the clear references to anthropophagy. On this trail of extreme self-harm bordering on self-mutilation it is impossible not to mention Anthropophagus, Dans ma peau and Naked Blood.
