Devil (USA - 2010) is the title of the horror film directed by John Erick Dowdle, the director of the films Quarantine, The Poughkeepsie Tapes and the distinguished Necropolis - City of the Dead.
Devil is based on a subject by Indian filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan (And the Day Came, Split, The Visit), here also serving as producer.
Devil is a short-lived (about 70 minutes) horror genre film that, although it has an unoriginal basic idea, has some good gimmicks and manages to keep the viewer's attention until the end of the viewing. Well shot and excellently acted by a handful of little-known actors who sketch a fair performance, Devil is an example of how a single location (in this case the elevator) was well exploited.
The cockpit in fact becomes a small claustrophobic scenario where Evil manifests itself by pitting the five passengers who are stuck inside against each other. The group will have to contend with evil personified by one of them.
The (elevator) light jumping intermittently, triggering not only panic among the protagonists but also a chasm of suspense in the home audience, is certainly one of the film's strong points, including the various final twists and turns. Devil is definitely not a masterpiece but rather an enjoyable film in which the tension is well dosed.
Devil is available on DVD and Blu-ray formats from Universal. The film is distributed by CG Entertainment.
