Initially set for June 12, 2020, and then for October 16 in U.S. theaters, the release date of the new Candyman has been postponed to 2021. Universal and MGM have not yet revealed the new release date, which will probably be announced in the coming weeks.
Produced by Jordan Peele (Escape - Get Out, Us) in collaboration with MGM/Universal and directed by Nia DaCosta (Little Woods), Candyman is the sequel to Candyman - Terror Behind the Mirror (1992) by Bernard Rose and features the return of the iconic Tony Todd, the protagonist of the saga.
The story takes place in the run-down Cabrini-Green where Candyman was murdered. Artist Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) moves to Chicago with his girlfriend. Here the man becomes interested in Candyman's story and even dedicates an opera to him. In doing so, however, the artist will unwittingly open a doorway into the past that will not only endanger his sanity but also trigger a series of terrifying and bloody events.
The screenplay of Candyman was written by Jordan Peele and Win Rosenfeld while the cast also includes Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman), Colman Domingo, Teyonah Parris, Kyle Kaminsky, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Nadia Simms and Aaron Crippen.
