In 1973, the versatile and prolific Sergio Martino (All Colors of Darkness, Your Vice is a Closed Room and Only I Have the Key, The Mountain of the Cannibal God) signed the direction of The bodies show evidence of rape (aka Torso), un giallo molto intenso e aggressivo per l'epoca in cui è stato realizzato. A renderlo particolarmente diverso dai film appartenenti al giallo, sono le sue contaminazioni con altri generi come il thriller e l'horror ma anche la fortissima componente erotica.
It has now become a cult favorite among fans of the genre, Torso is characterized by a remarkable use of locations and by several erotic and saucy, even interracial, siparietti in which nudity is rampant. What elevates this film above the productions of the period is precisely the perfect fusion of eroticism and violence, elements, these, that will leave the foundation for the slasher, a genre of which Martino's film is considered the precursor.
The bodies show evidence of rape does not sketch a story by seasoning it with only eros (concentrated, more than anything else, in the first part of the film). To the pleasure of the flesh, Sergio Martino overloads a massive dose of violence, distributed this, with the same brutal intensity towards anyone, especially the student protagonists.
Il killer incappucciato infatti, strangola, pugnala e fa a pezzi le sue vittime servendosi di un seghetto. Come il titolo potrebbe lasciar pensare, l'assassino in realtà non abusa sessualmente delle malcapitate ma si accanisce sui loro corpi nei peggiori modi possibili. Ne derivano così, indimenticabili spettacoli sanguinolenti in cui regna una spietata violenza (da manuale il massacro nella villa dove, la protagonista intepretatata da Suzy Kendall, assiste impotente all'omicidio delle sue amiche).
Oltre a portare in scena una storia che oscilla tra piacere e dolore, Sergio Martino è abile nell'intesservi intere sequenze costruite sulla tensione che anticipano e accompagnano quelle sugli efferati omicidi.
Quasi privo di dialoghi, l'angosciante finale (gli ultimi trenta minuti circa) è ottimo per ritmo e soprattutto per l'uso della suspense che qui raggiunge massimi livelli.
Torso è dunque un film di una bellezza inarrivabile, sicuramente uno dei migliori lavori di Sergio Martino nonché uno dei più rappresentativi e validi titoli appartenenti alla cinematografia degli anni '70.
Plot: In Perugia, a serial killer claims victims among university students. Meanwhile, students Daniela, Katia, Ursula, and Jane go out of town to spend a couple of days in an isolated villa. Unfortunately for them, the killer will follow them to tear them to shreds.
The cast includes Suzy Kendall, Tina Aumont, John Richardson, Luc Merenda, Roberto Bisacco, Angela Covello, Ernesto Colli, Carla Brait, Conchita Airoldi and Patrizia Adiutori.
Sergio Martino collaborated on the film's screenplay with Ernesto Gastaldi.
