Love Song for a Vampire - Vampire Ethology from F. W. Murnau to Taika Waititi by Gabriella Giliberti is unmissable for horror historians and those who love vampire movies.
This is a pop essay on the evolution of the vampire in film and TV. A journey through the decades. From myth to cinematic icon via folklore, discovering the change of the vampire, through the films that have made history (and more), as a perfect metaphor to trace an evolutionary and involutionary path of the human being, where monsters do not always have fangs and smell of death.
"Monsters are doors to a world that escapes the dictatorship of the normal. They are a fascinating elsewhere, a distant lure, a hand that grabs our throat, and if at first we think they are strangling us they actually force us to breathe in another way, simply our own.
And of all monsters, the Vampire is the one that eternally renews itself with the greatest fury in the collective imagination, which from age to age keeps alive our ability to wonder and disturb us through its unbreakable link with immortality, blood and love."
- The preface is by. Giulia Paganelli.
The essay Moondance - Tim Burton, an alien in Hollywood is signed by Federica Aliano, Gianmaria Cataldo, Valentina Cestra, Gabriella Giliberti, Matthew Maino, Lorenzo Marletti, Fabio Pezzetti Tonion, Emanuele Rauco, Luca Ruocco and Elisa Torsiello.
The essay is a tribute to the poetics of the films of Tim Burton and was produced on the occasion of the exhibition "Tim Burton's World", scheduled to be held at the Museum of Cinema in Turin starting Oct. 10.
The authors of the Eiga collective dive into the depths of Burton's imagination, exploring its most iconic and recognizable aspects. They trace an ideal map of his filmography: from his visionary debut feature Pee-wee's Big Adventure up to the most famous masterpieces and the most recent creations.
They examine the filmic spaces and his protagonists, the anti-heroes, the lights and shadows that have always marked his macabre and fantastic vision, offering a critical and passionate perspective that allows readers to get to know or deepen their understanding of this extraordinary director's vision.
"Everyone knows Tim Burton, even those who have never sat in a movie theater. Calling together a handful of authors to tell his work and his world might seem like an exercise in style worthy of Queneau, where everyone tells the same story in a different way. But it is precisely from this virtuosity, that unexpected ideas and surprises arise. Here, then, is a map of the afterlife, a toponymy among names, tombs and cities, a bestiary with special regard to dogs, an investigation of the body and monstrosity, a raid in one-step animation, a digression on light and darkness, a reflection on romantic love, and much, much more. To discover or rediscover a universe that is poetic and macabre, innocent and subversive, and that has shocked the contemporary collective imagination.".
- The preface is by. Stefano Bessoni.
The cover illustrations for both volumes are signed by Livio Squeo.
