Produced, written and directed by Justin Simien, Bad Hair is an homage to Japanese movies, in particular, to The Wig (aka Ga-bal), a South Korean horror film in which a terminally ill woman is haunted by a cursed wig. In Bad Hair there are also references to the episode "Hair" of the horror choral Body Bags (1993), in which a man obsessed with baldness resorts to a regrowth treatment that will prove to be very dangerous.
In Bad Hair however, the protagonist is a woman who dreams of becoming a TV star and, in order to be in line with an image-obsessed world dominated by vanity, decides to change her look by resorting to hair extensions. From that moment on, the girl will experience a hellish situation because of the diabolical locks that strangely seem to have a life of their own.
