Produced, written and directed by Justin Simien, Bad Hair is an homage to Japanese movies, in particular, to The Wig (aka Ga-bal), a South Korean horror film in which a terminally ill woman is haunted by a cursed wig. In Bad Hair sono presenti anche dei rimandi all'episodio "Hair" dell'horror corale Body Bags (1993), in which a man obsessed with baldness resorts to a regrowth treatment that will prove to be very dangerous.
In Bad Hair però, la protagonista è una donna che sogna di diventare una star televisiva e, per essere in linea con un mondo ossessionato dall'immagine e dominato dalla vanità, decide di cambiare il proprio look ricorrendo alle extension. Da quel momento la ragazza vivrà una situazione infernale a causa delle diaboliche ciocche che stranamente sembrano avere una vita propria.
