On a November night in 1973 in a quaint house at No. 112 Ocean Avenue located in Amityville, Long Island, 23-year-old Ronald DeFeo kills his parents and his other four siblings in their sleep with gunshots, apparently prompted by some "voices"...
A year later the house is purchased by George and Katheleen Lutz (persuaded by the particularly favorable price), into which they move with their children. But soon unexplained events begin to happen, while a rapid change takes place in George's mind that leads him to lose control of himself and become a danger to his family. Meanwhile, the town priest tries to help the Lutzes, but is stopped by malign forces. After nearly a month passes, amidst dangers and constant threats, the family realizes that the house is possessed, and the only way to avoid tragedy is to escape.
One of the best haunted house horror films, Amityville Horror is the first in a series of films set in the Victorian house of Amityville, unfortunately almost never matched by its sequels. This is a good film, holding the viewer's attention in a crescendo of tension, culminating in an action-packed finale of destruction. Rosenberg has done a good job, and technically the film has no flaws. Good performances by the actors and more than appreciable special effects (also considering the year of release).
One of the cornerstones of the horror genre, which cannot be missed in any fan's collection.
