American Guinea Pig: Bouquet of Guts and Gore (USA – 2014) is the first entry in the American series inspired by the Japanese Guinea Pig saga, created by Hideshi Hino in 1985 and notorious for its hyper-realistic special effects, which led many to mistakenly believe it was a real snuff film, an assumption that ultimately fueled its notoriety.

The driving force behind the American series is Stephen Biro, founder of Unearthed Films, a company known for releasing some of the most disturbing and transgressive titles in underground cinema, including Aftermath, Slaughtered Vomit Dolls, This Hollow Sacrament, Where The Dead Go To Die, and Philosophy of a Knife. Unearthed Films was also the first label to officially distribute the Japanese Guinea Pig series.

bouquet2Stephen Biro writes and directs the first chapter, Bouquet of Guts and Gore, channeling his passion for extreme cinema, particularly the work of Hideshi Hino. The result is a brutal, no-holds-barred piece packed with relentless splatter and gore, aimed squarely at viewers with a taste for the most uncompromising corners of underground horror.

In the film, Amy and Erika are abducted by a man wearing a gas mask. After being injected with a powerful dose of LSD that leaves them immobilized and numb to pain, the two are laid out on tables and subjected to brutal dismemberment at the hands of a torturer wearing a Baphomet mask. Inside the torture room, two accomplices document the entire ordeal on Super 8 cameras, capturing every act inflicted on the victims.

americanThe film by Stephen Biro clearly echoes Guinea Pig 2: Flower of Flesh & Blood, where a drugged woman is methodically dismembered. In Bouquet of Guts and Gore, the killer follows a similar approach, an intentional choice by Biro, who also shot the film on Super 8 to recreate the raw, retro feel of ’80s underground horror. This stylistic decision extends beyond the format, influencing the overall aesthetic, including the distinctly '80s look of the two victims.

bouquet3At the request of one of the accomplices, the executioner subjects the two women to a series of escalating tortures, carrying out acts of inhuman cruelty with deliberate slowness. It's precisely this measured pace that makes the sequence so unsettling, gradually pulling the viewer into an increasingly disturbing space. The two men behind the cameras, the drugged and immobilized victims, the near silence broken only by the sound of tools and fragments of dialogue, all contribute to a deeply sick scenario, where violence is methodically inflicted on bodies that cannot react, fully exposed to the process of dismemberment.

What unfolds is a perverse parade of violence, where both the range of tortures and the tools used to carry them out become central to the experience. This obsessive focus on varied forms of suffering is what makes Stephen Biro's film stand out, leaning fully into the depiction of every possible form of physical torment. Adding to this grotesque display of butchered flesh are brief hints of necrophilia and cannibalism, elements that further push the film into even more depraved territory.

The film is steeped in a sick, oppressive atmosphere, made even heavier by the effective special effects crafted by Marcus Koch (known for "Circus of the Dead" and "Dead Still"), which give real impact to its splatter and gore sequences. Amputations, hammer blows, flayings, and eviscerations are rendered with striking realism, pushing the imagery to a level where it almost feels tangible, as if the stench of blood and entrails could seep through the screen.

In the end, American Guinea Pig: Bouquet of Guts and Gore succeeds in conveying that sense of squalor and madness that defines extreme cinema, making it a fitting recommendation for fans of uncompromising splatter and gore.

Cinematography is handled by James VanBebber, who also appears in the cast alongside Rogan Russell, Caitlyn Dailey, Ashley Lynn Caputo, Marshall Scott Gabbey, and musician Eight The Chosen One, the latter taking on the role of the executioner.
American Guinea Pig: Bouquet of Guts and Gore is produced by Unearthed Films and Oddtopsy FX.
