Adrenaline is the title of the choral thriller-action film conceived by Daniele Misischia ("Hobo" in Connections, "The return of Elena" in 17 at Midnight, Anna: chronicles of an emerging actress), in which, in addition to the aforementioned director, no less than nine other names from the Italian independent scene are involved, each of whom directed an episode: Paolo Del Fiol, Cristiano Ciccotti, Giacomo Gabrielli, Riccardo Camilli, Ivan King, Luca Baggiarini, Steven Renso, Michela Fornaci and Lorenzo Ciani. Ten directors then for ten episodes spanning shootings, drugs, prostitution but also alien invasions and psychopathic killers.

The official trailer for Adrenaline, misleadingly, gathers well-executed sequences for a project that promises to be, as per its title, adrenaline-pumping. The tension suggested by the title, the video, and even the tantalizing poster above, is unfortunately not constant for a number of reasons. As with any anthology film, in Adrenaline segments highlight different directorial styles and a different approach in addressing the main theme of the project. Successful or not, the episodes constitute what is the soul of the choral film, for a result that, while it has its merits and flaws, on the whole represents a brave homage to action cinema.
Adrenaline should be labeled as a thriller/action movie. This anthology, however, embraces multiple genres ranging from science fiction to comedy, from war to horror. The result is an uneven product, disappointing for those expecting a slew of typical action movie adrenaline shorts. The frame episode entitled "Adrenaline" is by Daniele Misischia and opens the ten episodes by reintroducing itself between each short offering small doses of adrenaline that are moreover the basis of the story. A boy injects his drug-addicted sister with a dose of adrenaline...
It continues with the first chapter "Encore", written and directed by Ivan King. Parkour and murder make up the ideal mix for an interesting episode about revenge that would have been far better with a more convincing ending. Good acting performance by Davide Gambarini, an expressive actor completely at ease in the part. The pounding music is by Zombie Sam.
Si passa al secondo episodio, "AOH!", un cortometraggio diretto da Michela Fornaci che ne ha curato anche la sceneggiatura. "AOH!" è uno dei migliori segmenti sia per regia, inquadrature, storia e dialoghi che per il finale per niente scontato. Una nota di merito anche ai due attori protagonisti Luigi Marani e Matteo Quinzi per la loro buona interpretazione. Tamarri e parolacce a go-go in un segmento ben realizzato e di intrattenimento.
The third chapter is "Light Night" by Steven Renso for a screenplay co-written by the same director with Naveen Ratnayake. Boring short film, uninvolving and not at all incisive. The story has no strong points and the acting evidence is bad, except for actor Davide Gambarini. The rest of the cast seems unfit for the role they have been assigned. The result is an acting rehearsal that borders on the ridiculous. Added to this is the annoying glossy cinematography (Naveen Ratnayake) that looks more like the vision of an astigmatic.
"Devil On The Road” è il titolo del quarto episodio, un segmento scritto e diretto da Daniele Misischia. E’ un cortometraggio semplice ma efficace grazie a una buona regia e all’interpretazione sopra le righe dei due protagonisti Claudio Camilli (“Hobo” in Connections) e Matteo Quinzi, già apprezzato nell’episodio "AOH!". Notevole il crescendo di tensione e la fotografia sulfurea (a cura di Misischia) che ben traducono l’atmosfera infernale suggerita dal titolo del corto in questione. La musica di Isac Roitn funziona e funge da buon sottofondo alla storia. “Devil On The Road” è un cortometraggio on the road ben confezionato.
Riccardo Camilli writes the script, directs and stars in the fifth installment of Adrenaline: "Arturo and Adelina in the conquest of love". This segment deviates from the genre of Misischia's project by blurring into black comedy, with high touches of comedy. Moreover, there is no lack of heinous images. Well directed and acted, it succeeds in its purpose of entertaining the audience by proving to be a chapter that sticks out. The screenplay is also good, solid and with very interesting insights. Besides Riccardo Camilli, the two actors Susy Suarez and Tito Laurenti are also good.
The sixth chapter, "Roughonium", is written and directed by Cristiano Ciccotti. The unfortunately banal and uninvolving story turns out to be quite boring although the performance of the cast is good (Claudio Camilli, Ettore Belmondo, Rimi Beqiri). Swinging short in which the purely action sequences hurt the final result. The shootout scenes are unconvincing: you never see a direct confrontation and get the impression that the enemy does not exist. Unimpressive.
The seventh chapter,"Niktorama” di Luca Baggiarini, è un corto di genere sci-fi cha ha poco a che vedere con il film corale in questione. Oltretutto si presenta come un prodotto di bassa qualità su tutti i livelli: regia, sceneggiatura e soprattutto prova recitativa. Gli effetti speciali sono scadenti e rendono ancora più ridicolo questo episodio che risulta essere il meno riuscito di questa antologia insieme a "Light Night". Indigesto.
We move on to "Neo Sekigun - The New Red Army”, l’ottavo capitolo dell’antologia per la regia e la sceneggiatura a firma di Paolo Del Fiol. Anche questo corto, come alcuni degli altri sopracitati, si discosta dal percorso intrapreso dai primi segmenti e dall’episodio cornice. "Neo Sekigun" è infatti un film di guerra dal taglio drammatico. Questo segmento si rivela essere il più maturo del bouquet. Del Fiol mette da parte le parolacce per presentare un corto elaborato nel quale tra l’altro le lingue parlate sono quattro: giapponese, arabo, inglese e francese. Validi regia e montaggio. Non manca qualche ingenuità e il doppiaggio non è sempre all’altezza. La musica di Antony Coia è scolpita sulle immagini.
"Iris" written and directed by Giacomo Gabrielli is the penultimate short film in this multifaceted anthology that also leaves room for a horror-splatter episode. A particular feature of the short is the use of subjective shots by both the perpetrator and the victim, a technique that makes it particularly successful and, in the absence of which, it would have been no different from the many "torture-porn" films so much in vogue lately. Music is absent, the whole thing concentrates on the executioner's breaths, the victim's moans, and the sound of ripped flesh. Successful, it sticks out.
Concludes the adrenaline-fueled "Evil Angels”, l’episodio diretto da Lorenzo Ciani. La sceneggiatura, a firma dello stesso regista, è quasi inesistente e ne consegue che la storia risulta confusa e per certi versi incomprensibile. "Evil Angels" è più che altro una sorta di videoclip che utilizza immagini, foto e post-it invece delle parole e delle azioni dei protagonisti. Buone regia e fotografia, azzoppate però dalla storia e dalla scelta di facilitare il lavoro attraverso l’esclusione di sound design e dialoghi. Idea strategica che però offre risultati non efficaci. Episodio soporifero.
