Following The Witches of Salem, Rob Zombie (The house of a thousand bodies, The House of the Devil) si cimenta in un altro horror che, come da titolo ("31") è dedicato alla Notte di Halloween.
As in his previous films, the director pours his expressive freedom into his latest work, directing a film (a slasher/horror) that reflects his signature style as well as his unhealthy fantasy of madness and circus setting (recurring themes in his filmography).
With 31 we witness a gory show with carrels of gratuitous violence accompanied by gallons of blood and various heinousness bringing to the stage a desperate struggle for survival typical of survival horror. The whole thing stands on a script (by
Rob Zombie) basic and simple that seems to be aimed at highlighting the game's truculent scenario and its mechanism.
31 is just that: the projection of a brutal game that does not need a cumbersome and complex script.
In these terms, Rob Zombie's film works and is appreciated for the slaughter brought to the stage and for that sense of oppression, perversion, madness, and surrealism that branches out throughout the film.
The sadistic villains (Sick-Head, Schizo-Head, Psycho-Head, Death-Head, Sex-Head), all different and peculiar, remain imprinted, just as one does not forget the grimy location that serves as a theater for actions dictated by the sadism and pleasure of the game's creators.
Sopra le righe poi è l'interpretazione di Richard Brake, qui nel ruolo di Doom-Head.
Plot: On October 30, 1976, five hippies are kidnapped and taken to "Murder World," a dilapidated industrial building. Here Father Devil (Malcolm McDowell) and his two associates, all dressed in nineteenth-century clothing, force them to participate in a game called "31." The abductees will have twelve hours to fight for their lives, which will be endangered by vicious and dangerous psychopaths dressed as clowns.
In the cast: Sherie Moon Zombie, Malcolm McDowell (Kiss of the Panther, A Clockwork Orange), Richard Brake, Judy Geeson, Meg Foster, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, Ginger Lynn, Daniel Roebuck, David Ury, Jeff Daniel Phillips, Jane Carr, Torsten Voges, Bari Suzuki, Pancho Moler, Elizabeth Daily, and Devin Sidell.
